Rouen – Chartres

Lunch stop yesterday by the River Eure near Louviers, and now that I can afford to eat, it was a proper celebration lunch stop: I splashed out one and a half Euros on a bottle of rough vin rouge and ate a whole Camembert!

The journey from Rouen to Chartres yesterday was made more complicated by another panic about the Catholicism Pure & Simple blog (it seem less simple than we make out…)  So I had to make a detour of quite a long way, looking for internet access, without success, adding another twenty miles onto a one hundred mle journey.  I arrived in Chartres at 2.30 am, shattered and hardly able to cycle up the last hill.

The St Francis window in the parish church at Pont de l’Arche was a good discovery.  I stopped here two years ago, walking to Compostela, but the church was closed.

At the presbytery I managed to get a pilgrim stamp in my credencial this time, and that too was a good discovery: a proper pilgrim stamp is available here.

For the rest of my blog from Chartres, please see the post on Catholicism Pure & Simple called “Notre Dame de Chartres changed my life”

Tomorrow I continue south towards Bonneval.

About Gareth Thomas

After a mixed career as an aircraft technician, London fringe theatre playwright, Franciscan friar, and secondary school teacher, I find myself looking after the needs of four donkeys in a remote location in the mountains in the Costa Blanca. I like to listen to BBC Radio 4 and the wind in the pine trees. I am writing a comedy about a school in Benidorm. My favourite film of all time is "Jean de Florette". If I had my time again I would not have spent the early 1970s working for Special Branch.
