Papa Donk

Astonishing news from Rome: the Pope modifies the Catholic Church’s position on contraception.

The news is confirmed: Pope Benedict XVI is modifying the Catholic Church’s absolute ban on the use of condoms. In doing so, however, he is not radically departing from Church teaching but, rather, helping to clear up years of disastrous confusion relating to the specific area of condoms and Aids. The Pope’s comments, in an interview to be published on Tuesday, are wise, humane, carefully balanced – and another reminder of the 83-year-old pontiff’s ability to surprise the world by refusing to conform to the stereotype of “hardline conservative”.
(reported on Damian Thompson’s blog.)

Whatever next?

About Gareth Thomas

After a mixed career as an aircraft technician, London fringe theatre playwright, Franciscan friar, and secondary school teacher, I find myself looking after the needs of four donkeys in a remote location in the mountains in the Costa Blanca. I like to listen to BBC Radio 4 and the wind in the pine trees. I am writing a comedy about a school in Benidorm. My favourite film of all time is "Jean de Florette". If I had my time again I would not have spent the early 1970s working for Special Branch.

  1. Bloody good job that condoms stop unwanted babies too…..but maybe His Holiness didn’t think of that. (Um..maybe he didn’t know…?)

  2. Frere Rabit says:

About seven years ago it was seriously suggested by a Vatican exploratory group on condoms that it might be possible to recommend the use of condoms for married couples only (i.e. the only Catholics legitimately licensed to do rude things to each other.) But this was only to prevent infection and the condoms could only be used providing they were punctured beforehand, so could not be regarded as a viable contraceptive device.

Thus these out-of-touch old fogies demonstrated their entire lack of knowledge of the role of body fluid exchange in the transmission of the human immunodeficiency virus.

You couldn’t make it up. I don’t think the human race will last very much longer id half of humanity is using condoms and the other half is demonstrating a degree of invincible ignorance about the realities of a major retro virus epidemic verging on the criminally insane. But then, who am I to comment? I’m just a rabit.
