Straw donks

The problem with the donks eating the straw in their stable is quite acute now. They are being quite fanatical about it and eating every last scrap of straw in the stable every day! A friend who has experience of horses says that the straw should be sprayed with disinfectant, then they won’t eat it. If I did this, I would be concerned that they might eat it anyway – and ingest the disinfectant – so I’m awaiting further advice on this. Any thoughts on the matter from those with experience would be appreciated.

About Gareth Thomas

After a mixed career as an aircraft technician, London fringe theatre playwright, Franciscan friar, and secondary school teacher, I find myself looking after the needs of four donkeys in a remote location in the mountains in the Costa Blanca. I like to listen to BBC Radio 4 and the wind in the pine trees. My favourite film of all time is "Jean de Florette" as it details the concerns of country people and quietly shows how evil enters our lives through mundane and petty matters. Now retired, I have lost the need to fight past battles and recognize that my various contributions to life - both ecclesiastical and secular - have been enjoyable, sometimes flawed, occasionally disastrous; but mostly times worth celebrating.

Do they have ‘donkey toys’ to take their minds off eating?

Good point. Maybe I should get them some Shrek videos, a bouncy castle, and a library of books about famous donkeys (Don Quixote, Winnie the Pooh, Travels With a Donkey in the Cevennes, Platero y Yo, and the Russian classic Quiet Flows the Donk, etc.) You’d think that animals wot has been looking after themselves successfully in the wild for millions of years would know wot to do with their time without just eating all the time and getting stupidly fat, wouldn’t you?

    Brush up your Dutch!
In de praktijk komt dat erop neer, dat ze zoveel stro mogen eten als ze willen
Stro kan een ezel onbeperkt eten. (onbeperkt = unlimited)
    Little Bit Grote Hooitas € 47,50 & Little Bit Graasmasker € 25,-
Stro kan een ezel onbeperkt eten.
It all boils down to: let them eat straw as much as they like!
But I’m no expert, so don’t take my word for it!
    Beautiful pics!

Straw is normal food for donks, they enjoy eating it and it fills their natural desire to eat poor quality roughage, lots more info here –
Don’t spray it, they’ll still try and eat it anyway and you’ll just be ruining their favourite snack 🙂

Thank you for that advice, Faith. I suppose I’ll just have to accept that the donks will eat their straw and it needs to be replaced every day!
