Matilde is six today, born on 5th June 2005, and Rubi is two tomorrow, born on 6th June 2009. They are pictured just now wearing their birthday presents, two new headcollars. When I have been to the bakery to get bread and donkey birthday treats, we are heading off for a birthday picnic at the Font de Moli picnic site. More donkey birthday photos later in the day.
The donkey birthday picnic started off reasonably well. There was a clear line of demarcation between donkey food and rabit picnic table. Then, as with anything involving donkeys and food, it all got very pushy. Rubi attempted to drink my beer. Totally unforgivable, even if she is a birthday girl tomorrow. Then Matilde made a brilliant precision assault on my orange and successfully carried it off the table, but dropped it and passed it to Rubi with one of those Beckham shots that football fans and mathematicians analyse on prime time television, but rarely seen done by a donkey. Rubi ate the orange. While Rubi was entangled in her lead rope and I was extricating her, Matilde ate my Camembert cheese and bread roll. After our picnic, we started the long trek home, back through Finestrat (stopping for another beer at the Moli, because the donkeys needed a rest) and then a really interesting donkey psychology event as we passed the Finestrat Ayuntamiento (town hall). Matilde, the birthday girl, caught sight of herself in a plate glass window and was suddenly captivated. The really interesting question is this. Did she think she was looking at another burra or did she know she was looking at herself?
