Welcome to the world, Morris

We have a foal! Born in the early evening on October 1st. I went for a beer in Finestrat and returned to find a donkey I didn’t recognise standing next to Rubi. He is beautiful, and when I first saw him he was still wet. Rubi gave birth in a dusty corner of the field -after all my efforts to ensure there was clean straw every day in the stable – and she had done everything for herself when I arrived home. The placenta was lying discarded in the field. Here is Morris with his proud mum.

The photos are not very good quality because Morris was born just before the end of natural daylight and I did not want to use flash and scare the newborn. More pics in the morning when I can see Morris in daylight. He is lovely!

Thanks for all your comments! It’s nice that so many people can share in Morris’s first hours of life.

About Gareth Thomas

After a mixed career as an aircraft technician, London fringe theatre playwright, Franciscan friar, and secondary school teacher, I find myself dividing my time mostly between looking after the needs of four donkeys in a remote location in the mountains in the Costa Blanca and preparing a legal case against the corrupt management of my monstrous last employer - the Elians group - for unfair dismissal. I like to hear the wind in the pine trees. I do not like struggling to get a duvet into a duvet cover. My musical tastes are extinct and I have mostly given up cycle racing.

Thanks, Barbara. (You’re coming up as ‘Anonymous’ again! No idea why…)

The vet told me to put the placenta in the freezer and she will inspect it later. So that’s next to my Sunday lunch, which doesn’t seem a particularly pleasing arrangement…

Very happy for you and your donkeys. I expect this is filling your life at the moment. It will be wonderful when you are able to walk big distances with them.

The placenta arrangements are indeed a bit yuch!

All good things to you and your animals.
