Morris’s first new day

I went to the stable early this morning and found Morris happily spread out on a pile of clean straw, having his first Sunday lie-in. Mother Rubi was standing guard, so I kept my distance at first, having been given a warning bite on my knee yesterday when I got too close to Morris. I have been watching them do the morning feed and Morris is drinking all the nutrients and special immune system additives that naturally come with Rubi’s first milk.

Then I fed Rubi and Morris found himself ignored by her for the first time. To get some attention back, he did his first leap! All four little hooves off the ground in a short vertical take-off experiment. Needless to say, this led to a crash-landing and immediate attention from mum. As a rebuke for disturbing her breakfast, Rubi bit him and went back to her feed. She’s going to be a good mum.

I didn’t get any of that on camera, unfortunately, as I was so taken with the charm of young Morris that I left my camera on the cisterna wall, but the following video (now on YouTube) takes it up from there. More later.

About Gareth Thomas

A fairly mixed career starting as an aircraft technician and later Franciscan friar eventually led into secondary school teaching. I settled in Spain where I teach Geography part-time and spend the rest of my time looking after the needs of four donkeys in a remote location in the mountains in the Costa Blanca. I have two blogs: a geography blog and a donkey blog.

Gareth, your life these days is straight out of a TV sitcom… or a “reality” show! Can´t wait to see the next set of pics of the Big Surprise!

BTW, I think you need to find another veterinarian.
    Congratulations x2!
