The foals, Aitana in the foreground and Morris behind her in the photo, are seven months old. Today we are celebrating because I went for a job interview this morning and I have secured our future for the moment with a new post in a different local school. The temporary contracts offered by my present employer meant that I would have had to wait until the end of June before finding out if I had another year’s contract for next September. By that time, jobs elsewhere would be hard to find, as they are advertised before Easter. I am so relieved because I can plan for the future and the donkeys are secure.

I might even allow Matilde, my only beer drinking donkey, to join in the proper celebration with a little Estrella Levante in a bowl.

About Gareth Thomas

After a mixed career as an aircraft technician, London fringe theatre playwright, Franciscan friar, and secondary school teacher, I find myself looking after the needs of four donkeys in a remote location in the mountains in the Costa Blanca. I like to listen to BBC Radio 4 and the wind in the pine trees. I am writing a comedy about a school in Benidorm. My favourite film of all time is "Jean de Florette". If I had my time again I would not have spent the early 1970s working for Special Branch.

Hooray indeed! Well done and a pat on the head to all the donkeys for their moral support! Aitana is looking very pretty and I have been taking note of Morris’ 1970s ‘do’ in recent posts – perhaps this explains the music problem?

  11. Jackie says:

Thanks everyone! Confirmed officially today, so proper celebrations now. In these times, to get a job is a kind of privilege, isn’t it? Whatever happened to the idea that we would all retire earlier…. ?
