Ibiza(Part 3) Mystery Worshipper in the Cathedral

In the best tradition of the Mystery Worshipper (Ship of Fools blog) and Bruvver Eccles (Fool on a Sinking Ship blogue), I offer the following Mystery Worshipper Mass report:

Cathedral of Santa Maria de Eivissa, 10.30 Mass for the Feast of the Assumption, 15th August 2013.

Did anynybody greet you on entering the church?
Yes, a pigeon outside the cathedral door sat on my bicycle seat and did a whoopsie.

What were the opening words of the Mass?
Don’t know. Arrived covered in perspiration five minutes late after cycling up steep streets through Ibiza old town.

How many people attended the service?
About 27 including four franciscan sisters. About three hundred people came in the through the door during the Mass, took a photograph, and walked out again.

The above is the sort of photograph they took.

The Mass was a pleasant surprise because – although it was very poorly attended (27 people for the main Mass for the Feast of the Assumption) it was very prayerful, albeit Novus Ordo, and there were about fifteen people who received communion kneeling (including your intrepid Rabit reporter). The priest made his getaway afterwards on a motorbike.

More photos of Ibiza cathedral. You will see that the year of faith is well flagged-up:

Just down the hill the Augustinian sisters have a chapel for permanent exposition of the Lord. A great witness.

If none of this Catholic presence manages to attract the tourists, the Caritas Coca Cola machine is one last crafty attempt.

About Gareth Thomas

A fairly mixed career starting as an aircraft technician and later Franciscan friar eventually led into secondary school teaching. I settled in Spain where I teach Geography part-time and spend the rest of my time looking after the needs of four donkeys in a remote location in the mountains in the Costa Blanca. I have two blogs: a geography blog and a donkey blog.

Really enjoyed your Ibiza trip. I visited there twice in the 1970’s. Loved the photos. God bless
