Happy Christmas

Happy Christmas everyone. It is a simple Christmas, as always, here with the donkeys. The routine is the same for them whatever the season or the weather, but today – unusually for December – it is raining unceasingly and our planned Christmas morning walk is cancelled. Rubí has her new smart head collar. The others have all has their head collars replaced when they outgrew them, but Rubí has not grown much bigger since I bought her three years ago. The new head collars have soft foam padding in the nose-band and the head-band. I have tried to keep to a consistent colour code, so the donkeys can be recognized in old photos: red for Rubí (naturally!), green for Aitana, blue (old purple foal collar) for Morris, and salmon pink for Matilde. I was going to take a few more photos of donks in Santa hats today when out walking, but due to the weather that is not possible. It’s an in-stable Christmas.

So, here are the donks from a few days ago in their Santa hats and the foals in the photo archive.

Finally, well done to Matilde who has been bringing a little joy to the elderly in an old folks home this Christmas.

About Gareth Thomas

After a mixed career as an aircraft technician, London fringe theatre playwright, Franciscan friar, and secondary school teacher, I find myself looking after the needs of four donkeys in a remote location in the mountains in the Costa Blanca. I like to listen to BBC Radio 4 and the wind in the pine trees. I am writing a comedy about a school in Benidorm. My favourite film of all time is "Jean de Florette". If I had my time again I would not have spent the early 1970s working for Special Branch.

Rubi has a ‘pleased with Christmas present’ glint in her eye! Happy Christmas! Carrots all round… xxx

Hope you all had a lovely family gathering.
Do all donkeys have their birthdays on 1 January, same as thoroughbred horses?
If so, you know what that means. Lots of birthday snaps of donkeys in colour-coded party hats.

Hi GC, hope you are having a lovely Christmas. (I enjoyed your recent article on CPS, by the way.)

No, I did not know about racehorses having their birthdays on January 1st! My young donks curiously have their birthdays on consecutive days: the two foals were born within 24 hours, Morris 1st October and Aitana 2nd October 2011; and the birthdays of their mothers, recorded in their equine passports are on the same day, 6th June, but a year apart! (Matilde will be six next year and Rubí five.)
