Birthday weekend for donks

Rubí was six yesterday, following Matilde’s seventh birthday on Friday, and they both had presents of new head-collars and lead ropes.

Matilde has gone pink.  Rubí stays red: she has had a red head-collar since the beginning and – like Morris with blue, and Aitana with green – it helps identify the donkey in old photographs, particularly with the three brown donkeys who don’t look very different at first glance.

About Gareth Thomas

After a mixed career as an aircraft technician, London fringe theatre playwright, Franciscan friar, and secondary school teacher, I find myself looking after the needs of four donkeys in a remote location in the mountains in the Costa Blanca. I like to listen to BBC Radio 4 and the wind in the pine trees. I am writing a comedy about a school in Benidorm. My favourite film of all time is "Jean de Florette". If I had my time again I would not have spent the early 1970s working for Special Branch.

Very pretty colours, I especially like the pink! Hope you enjoyed their party too, with a few friends? Don’t like the idea of your possibly getting head-butted though….Maggie xx

  2. Catherine Geldart says:

I can feel the sunshine from cold old England! Love your posts!

  3. Very brave! Tying her to a fig tree!!! She must be thinking of Tuesday and has not realised yet!

  4. Frere Rabit says:

Ah yes, Martine: well spotted. It’s a fig tree. That’s my grooming tree.

I have them in one at a time under the fig tree for grooming, in a special grooming compound I created a few months back. They fight each other to be first in through the gate. The main reason I needed a separate grooming area is that lots of fur comes off, then the other donkeys gather round and eat it! So this arrangement allows me to sweep up the fur before the next one comes in! Great shady spot under the fig tree.

Maggie, I get head-butted by Matilde whatever I do. She just likes to assert herself. Thanks for the comment Catherine: yes, the weather here may be sunny, but it’s also exhausting. In the 40s today. Difficult to do anything…

  5. Mary says:

    Aw, so sweet!

  6. Cath says:

“Glory be to God for dappled things.” happy birthday Matilde ,perhaps frererabit will recite the rest which might give the beautiful Rubi another topic for her ruminations tomorrow ( Tuesday). Do the brown coated donkeys show any perceptible differences in colour through the seasons? And belated birthday greetings to Rubi. They are both beautiful donkeys!
